| First Annual Heartland Classics Wood
Workshop |
30 people
watched in amazement as a piece of limp white oak was pulled from an
unusual contraption, that looked somewhat like a combination sluice box
and still, and bent into a horseshoe shape. This demonstration was just
one of the many interesting subjects that were discussed at the First
Annual ACBS - Heartland Classics Chapter Wood Workshop, February 9, 2002
at Howard Classic Boats shop in Langley.

Other topics
of discussion and hands on projects included "West System" wood
encapsulating, bright work repair, staining and varnishing by Dan Diehl.
Several participants did a great job of demonstrating the technique that
Dan taught on varnishing. Mark Monkres demonstrated a new project he
has been perfecting, a "Bilge Counter" and (also) gave a show & tell
timing demonstration on a special engine he brought. He also passed out a
degree wheel and other timing information to all. Dave Lundy discussed and
showed how to use a steam box and to bend wood. Lots of great discussions
came from each demonstration on how to and different techniques to use. |

Lunch was
provided by Howard Classic Boats and prepared by Phyllis Bradburry,
Terry's wife. The smoked brisket, baked beans and coleslaw was such a big
hit, seconds wiped the platters clean. |

An exciting
announcement was made. The "1929 Hickman Sea Sled" being raffled by ACBS
for the Endowment Scholarship Fund will be at our 9th Annual Boat Show at
Grand Lake. |
|
It was agreed,
one day was not near enough time for the subjects, and there is much more
to cover, so we will have some part of the November meeting as hands on
demonstrations. |
|
A door prize
drawing was held at the end of the day with nine items that were donated
by Paints Plus of Stover, MO. Southern Crown Boat Works & Joinability
provided catalogs and other hand outs.
We appreciated members traveling from KS and AR, and new members that
signed on at the show.
A fun and informative day was had by all. |
